Jawai Dam

Jawai Dam

Rajasthan’s largest dam — a paradise for birds and crocodiles

About Jawai Dam

Built across the Jawai River, Jawai Dam is the largest dam in western Rajasthan. Completed in 1957, it serves as the primary water source for the region and has created a thriving ecosystem that supports diverse wildlife including crocodiles, flamingos, cranes, and countless bird species.

Crocodile Sightings

Jawai Dam is one of the best places in Rajasthan to spot marsh crocodiles (muggers). These massive reptiles, some growing up to 14 feet, can be seen basking on the dam’s banks and islands. Winter months offer the best viewing as crocodiles emerge to warm themselves in the sun.

Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Over 100 species of birds visit Jawai Dam annually. From November to February, witness flamingos, bar-headed geese, demoiselle cranes, pelicans, and painted storks. The dam is recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International.

Jawai Bandh safari and Bera

A Jawai Bandh safari and a Jawai Bandh leopard safari run on the granite hills around the reservoir. The same landscape is what people mean by a Bera safari, a Bera leopard safari, or a Leopard Safari Bera Rajasthan. Bera is the village in this leopard country, and Jawai Bandh is the dam beside it. One private jeep covers both.
