Life with the Rabari Herders of Jawai

Cultural & Wildlife Immersion

The Rabari are a semi-nomadic pastoral community who have grazed camels, sheep and goats across the Jawai hills for centuries. Recognisable by the men's red turbans and white attire and the women's black odhnis and heavy silver jewellery, they live alongside Jawai's leopards with remarkable tolerance, often treating the big cats as guardians of the hill shrines. With a Rabari host from a nearby village, you walk with the herds at dawn, share chai and rotla in a family dhani, visit the hill temples where leopards are revered, and learn how this community and the leopards have coexisted without conflict. Evenings end with leopard safaris through the same granite outcrops the herders know by heart.
